Astro
Café at Mount John
Shelter from the wind and share a meal, or just a
hot or cold drink, while enjoying the ethereal view all
around the Mackenzie Basin. We are weather-proof under
our glazed roof and snug behind glass walls with views on
all sides, and doors and windows that can be opened to
the fresh, clean Mackenzie air and the outdoor surrounds.
We offer
Day Tours of
the Observatory departing with a knowledgeable
guide, on request from the Café. On a clear day you
can watch our turbulent star, the Sun, through our
special solar telescope or visit the exciting
MOA (Microlensing Observations in
Astrophysics) project which uses the
largest telescope in New Zealand.
If lunch is on your mind, we can prepare a jumbo
sandwich with a variety of fillings for you, with fresh
Mackenzie High Country bread, sun-dried tomato, and
gourmet mustards. If you prefer a sweet, we have
something for every taste. Our coffees and hot chocolate
are famous in the region and our iced chocolate is
guaranteed to sooth the heat of summer!
You are welcome to drive up the mountain road and see us
at the Café any day — weather permitting — from
10am to
5pm during
winter, and
9am to
6pm at other times (please, no vehicles
over 23 seat capacity, owing to the occasional tight bend
on the road).
We'll be pleased to see you there!
You may be interested to know that we also open the
Café at night for those guests attending our
Mt John Star Tours. We
offer you a complimentary hot chocolate by
candlelight whilst you contemplate the stunning
night sky that Tekapo is famous for, revealed to you
outside by our experienced guides. The Café's
underfloor heating makes the experience all the more
enjoyable on chilly nights!
